- Barberton dates from 1884 when a gold rush brought thousands of diggers to the area.
- Today the goldmines (4) all older than 100 years are still in full production.
- Many of the reminders of the gold rush days and the 4 museums create a pleasant experience for the visitor to our town. Gold panning and underground tours form part of this historical ambience, as well as 4X4 trips into the mountains of Eureka City near the Sheba Mine.
- Barberton area farmers predominantly produce sugar cane, sub tropical fruit and vegetables, with an established tea plantation and factory nearby. Macadamia nuts are an up and coming product. A crocodile farm also exists in the town.
- Forestry occupies a large tract of land in the area with several sawmills operating around town. The Sappi/Lomati woodworking plant is one of the largest in the country.
- Barberton has been identified nationally and by the Japanese Investment Co-operation Agency as the area with the most tourism potential with initiatives such as the paving of the road to Swaziland (R40) and the development of the Mountain lands Game Reserve as anchors. A well-developed hospitality industry supports the tourism attractions.
