The Municipality is one of the five local municipalities within Ehlanzeni District Municipality, situated in the Southern Lowveld of Mpumalanga and is predominantly a Swazi Area.
Umjindi is a historical gold-mining area set in magnificent surroundings, 45 km by road from Mbombela-Nelspruit. Umjindi's economy today centres around gold mining, forestry, agriculture and tourism, where large initiatives have been identified such as the tentative listing of the Barberton-Makhonjwa Moutainland as the World Heritage Site.
